14 Letters to You ❤️
This year, for my birthday, my sister collected letters from at least 28 loved ones who shared beautiful messages of love, encouragement, memories, and gratitude toward me. To say I was overwhelmed by all the love is an understatement. My friends and family know me as the writer in their lives, so they went above and beyond in their letters to show how much I mean to them. It's a gift I will treasure forever.
It’s crazy how easy it is to forget how loved you are when one or two things don’t go your way. But if this past birthday taught me anything, it’s that even when you don’t feel deserving, you are still worthy of all the love this world has to offer. This one precious gift allowed me to reflect on love in all its forms. Sometimes, we limit love to romance, but in reality, love surrounds us every day.
Love is in the friends and family who show up for us. It’s in the parent who makes your favorite meal just because they feel like it. It’s in the sibling who shares the craziest memes just to make you snort with laughter. It’s in the friend who shows up at your house because they miss you and want to bother you. Love is in the small child who reaches for your hand when they need help getting somewhere or something.
That very love lifted me during one of the hardest years of my life. There were days when it was hard to get out of bed, days when tears replaced all three meals, days when I felt alone and abandoned, days when I felt like a failure. But how wrong I was. If I can share a tidbit from my birthday post this year:
"When I couldn’t muster up the courage and strength to push forward, God put my community to work. When I became distant, my loved ones put on their best shoes and ran to find me. When I preferred silence, they flooded my life with laughter and joy. When I didn’t know what to say to God, they went to the throne of grace on my behalf, praying life-changing prayers. And even when my tears became as deep as an ocean, they built boats strong enough to withstand the waves just to be close to me. They never left me stranded."
When I think about the human love I was fortunate enough to receive, I know that even that is just a glimpse of a greater love—God’s love. It’s the kind of love that fills the gaps in ways human love simply cannot.
I remember my earliest memory of Valentine’s Day being in elementary school, passing out Valentine’s Day cards to everyone in class. I knew it was a day to show others that they are cared for, appreciated, and loved. Because of that, Valentine’s Day has become one of my favorite holidays. Of course, its origins had more to do with romantic love, but I’m so happy that, over time, it has expanded to encompass love of all types. But I cannot talk about a day of love without talking about Love itself—God.
John 3:16 stands as one of the most profound and widely known verses in the Bible, capturing the very heart of Christianity: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." As I've grown older, this verse has deepened in its significance, resonating with me in ways I couldn’t have fully understood in my younger years.
Imagine this: You have only one child, and they choose to enlist in the military, knowing they may be asked to sacrifice their life for a country that may not even deserve such loyalty. Despite the risks, your child insists that this sacrifice is necessary, so that others may feel cared for and protected. If it were me, I’d probably find a hundred reasons to try to convince them to reconsider. Yet, God didn’t hesitate. He didn’t question the worthiness of the people He was sacrificing His Son for. Instead, He saw us as precious, valuable, and deeply loved, even when we were indifferent or unfaithful toward Him. And if He had to do it all over again, He would. Without hesitation. Over and over again.
That kind of love is incomprehensible. It's a love that no movie, song, or story can truly encapsulate. It’s beyond understanding, limitless in its depth, and immeasurable in its grace. And the most incredible part? This love is not distant or abstract; it’s here, freely available to you and me, no matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done. There is nothing—absolutely nothing—that can separate us from the boundless love of God. His love is relentless, always pursuing, always present, and never-ending.
In this month of love, I want to remind you that Love has never missed you, nor will it ever. After all, God is Love. Every hug, every kind word, every prayer someone has said for you—those are echoes of God’s love. So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I want to share 14 short love notes from the One who loves you most. It is my hope that the same empowerment of love I felt from my birthday letters, you feel that and more.
